"to" ใช้ในความหมายได้ต่างๆกันไป ในบทนี้จะกล่าวเฉพาะ "to" ในความหมายว่า "เพื่อ"
เนื่องจากมีหลายคำในภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้ในความหมายว่า "เพื่อ" ดังนั้น ขอให้หลักการไว้ว่า เมื่อใช้ to ในความหมายว่า "เพื่อ" ให้ต่อท้ายคำ to ด้วยกริยา หรือทำเป็นสูตรอย่างง่ายว่า to+verb
