การใช้ "Can" และ "be+able+to" เพื่อแสดงความสามารถ

โดยทั่วไปเรามักจะใช้คำว่า Can ในภาษาไทยว่า "สามารถ" แต่อย่างเดียว  เช่น You can book the ticket now.คุณสามารถจองตั๋วได้ในตอนนี้  ซึ่งที่จริงการใช้พูดมักจะนิยมความหมายลักษณะว่า ทำอะไรได้ ทำอะไรเป็นมากกว่า   และการใช้ Can แต่อย่างเดียวเพื่อสื่อความหมายแสดงความสามารถ ไม่เพียงพอที่จะใช้สื่อสารในภาษาอังกฤษ เพราะโครงสร้าง กลุ่มคำ be+able+to ก็มีความหมายเช่นเดียวกัน และหลีกเลี่ยงที่จะไม่ใช้ไม่ได้ เนื่องจากผู้พูดอาจจะเลือกใช้คำลักษณะนี้  ทำนองเดียวกับการใช้ คำว่า กิน และ ทาน ที่มีความเหมือนกันในภาษาไทย

ตัวอย่าง
๑. คุณเข้าพักได้เลยค่ะ
    You can check-in now(right now).
    You are able to check-in now(right now).
๒. เขา(ผู้หญิง)พูดภาษากวางตุ้งได้ไหม?
    Can she speak Cantonese?
    Is she able to speak Cantonese?
๓. ฉัน/ผม ไปเป็นเพื่อนคุณไม่ได้
    I cannot accompany(escort) you.
    I am not able to accompany(escort) you.
๔. คุณทานอาหารเผ็ดเป็นไหม?
    Can you eat/have spicy food?
    Are you able to eat/have spicy food?
๕. คุณจ่ายเงินสดได้ไหมคะ/ครับ?
    Can you pay in cash?
    Are you able to pay in cash?
๖. ในประเทศเวียตนาม เขาลาคลอดกันได้๖เดือน แต่ในประเทศไทยลาได้แค่๓เดือน
    In Vietnam, they can have pregnancy leave for 6 months but in Thailand they can have only 3 months.

สำหรับการใช้ enable นั้น  เราใช้ในความหมายว่า  "ทำให้.........สามารถที่จะเป็นอย่างไร"  หรือ "ทำให้...............เป็นอย่างไรได้"    มีหลักการใช้คือ  มี enable คู่กับ to   โดยวางรูปแบบเป็น  enable................to .....................
